A convenient synthesis of triaryl and trialkyl phosphine dichlorides by oxidation of tertiary phosphines with bis(trichloromethyl) carbonate(triphosgene)

Tertiary phosphines are quantitatively oxidised by 1/3 of an equivalent of triphosgene to the corresponding P(V)dihalides. This reaction provides an excellent preparation of Ph₃PCl₂.
