Reactions of substituted benzaldehydes with sodium hydrogensulfide in the presence of nitrobenzene, nitrosobenzene, or azobenzene in liquid ammonia produce the corresponding benzyl alcohols and benzamides. On the other hand, reaction of benzaldehyde with sodium sulfide produces benzylalcohol and benzamide.A reaction mechanism has been proposed which involves benzaldehyde anion radical.
