For the preparation of supported NHC ligand 2, to a mixture of 1
(0.50g) in dry tetrahydrofuran (THF; 40 ml) at 0°C was added 1-phe-
nyl-1H-imidazole (0.3mmol) and the mixture was stirred at room
temperature for 24 h. After consumption of 1-phenyl-1H-imidazole
and production of 2, the residue was separated from the mixture
using an external permanent magnet, washed several times with
CH2Cl2 and THF and finally dried under vacuum at 60°C to afford 2.
The final catalyst nanoparticles 3 were obtained as a dark brown
solid by addition of NaPdCl3 (0.8 mg) and pyridine (25 μl, 0.3 mmol)
to a dispersed mixture of 2 (1.01 g) in methanol (5 ml) which was
stirred under argon atmosphere at room temperature for two days.
The resulting complex was collected using an external permanent
magnet and washed with ethanol (3× 10 ml) to remove the
unreacted materials and finally dried under air (89% yield based
on the amount of Pd in the catalyst determined using ICP analysis).

In a round-bottomed flask equipped with a magnetic stirrer, olefin
(1.2 mmol), aryl halide (1.0mmol), catalyst (20 mg, 0.036mol% Pd)
and K2CO3 (2eq.) in DMF (2 ml) were stirred under air atmosphere
at 100°C. The progress of the reaction was monitored using TLC
(eluent: n-hexane–ethyl acetate, 5:1) and GC. After completion of
the reaction, CH2Cl2 (15 ml) was added and the catalyst was sepa-
rated using an external magnetic. The organic layer was washed
with water (3×10ml) and dried over anhydrous MgSO4. The prod-
uct was isolated by column chromatography (n-hexane–ethyl ace-
tate, 5:1) to afford the corresponding products in yields of 42–98%.

In a round-bottomed flask equipped with a magnetic stirrer and a
condenser, phenylboronic acid (1.2 mmol), aryl halide (1.0mmol),
K2CO3 (2eq.) and catalyst (30 mg, 0.054 mol% Pd) were mixed in
EtOH–H2O (1:1v/v). The mixture was stirred at room temperature
under air atmosphere. The progress of the reaction was monitored
using TLC (eluent: n-hexane–ethyl acetate, 4:1) and GC. After com-
pletion of the reaction, CH2Cl2 (15 ml) was added and the catalyst
was separated using a permanent magnet. The organic phase
was washed with water (3× 10 ml), dried over anhydrous MgSO4
and the solvent evaporated under reduced pressure. The product
was isolated by column chromatography (n-hexane–ethyl acetate,
5:1) to afford the corresponding products in yields of 75–98%.
