A growing interest is observed in the combined HDS-hydrogenation activity of noble metal catalysts, connected with emission limitations of both sulfur and aromatics content in exhaust gases. The bulk composition, structure, and valence state of an alumina supported PdMoOx catalyst were studied by XRD, HRTEM, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, XPS, and ion scattering spectroscopy before and after sulfiding. Structural information, sulfur uptake, and exchange data were compared with the activity of these catalysts in HDS of thiophene. The sulfur uptake by alumina supported Pd-containing MoOx exceeded substantially that of the Pt-containing and of the nonpromoted molybdena. Molybdena formed amorphous layers on the surface and transforms into MoS2 patches upon sulfidation of PdMo. Palladium in PdMo reacted with H2S to yield Pd4S and Pd16S7 particles. Strong sulfidation increased the ratio of Mo(IV) and Mo(V) in comparison with samples, reduced in hydrogen. Thiophene HDS activity decreased upon "mild" sulfidation of PdMo and PtMo, but increased at "strong" sulfidation.
