9. (a) Racemization-free conversion of acetoxy ketones to hydroxy ketones: 3 mmol of acetoxy ketone in 30 ml of abs.
methanol was refluxed for 2 h in the presence of a catalytic amount of conc. sulfuric acid. To the reaction mixture was
added 100 ml of ethyl acetate, and the organic layer was washed with saturated NaHCO3 and water and dried over MgSO4.
The crude products were purified by flash column chromatography. (b) Racemization-free conversion of hydroxy ketones
to aceotoxy ketones: to the solution of 3 mmol of hydroxy ketone and 1 ml of dry pyridine in 20 ml of CH2Cl2 was added
1 ml of acetic anhydride at 0°C. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 15 h, washed with 1 N HCl solution and
brine, and dried over MgSO4. The crude products were purified by flash column chromatography. Using DMAP instead
of pyridine gives partial racemization of hydroxy ketones (see Ulku, D.; Tahir, M. N.; Tanyeli, C.; Demir, A. S.; Dikici, E.
Acta Cryst. 1997, C53, 1998).
