The 1,2-bis(3-indenyl)ethane dianion <(C9H6)CH2CH2(C9H6)>^2- reacts with the photochemically activated carbonyl complexes M(CO)5(thf) (M = Cr, Mo, W) to give the dinuclear anions <(η⁵ : η⁵-C9H6CH2CH2C9H6)2>^2-.These dianions react with CH3I to yield the corresponding dinuclear complexes, (η⁵ : η⁵-C9H6CH2CH2C9H6)2 (M = Mo, W) and (η⁶ : η⁶-C9H6MeCH2CH2C9H6Me)2, and the mononuclear complex, (η⁶-C9H6MeCH2CH2C9H7)Cr(CO)3.The crystal structures of C9H7CH2CH2C9H7 and (η⁵ : η⁵-C9H6CH2CH2C9H6)2 have been determined.
