Fluoro-alkene forming eliminations using antimony pentafluoride

Reactions involving perfluoro-2-iodopropane and 1,1-difluoroethene, give telomers (1) and these telomer iodides are coupled to give [(CF₃)₂CF(CH₂CF₂)_n-]₂ (2). Fluorodeiodination gives a series of compounds (CF₃)₂CF(CH₂CF₂)_nF (3). Lewis acid-induced eliminations from these systems is very effective using SbF₅ and cyclisations can also be induced by this methodology. A series of conjugated polymers is obtained by exposure of films of PVC, PVDF, and polytrifluoroethene to SbF₅ vapour.
