A novel reaction of some bis (aroylmethyl) sulfoxides with aromatic aldehydes and ammonium acetate

On reaction with aromatic aldehydes and ammonium acetate, bis(aroylmethyl) sulfoxides lead to the formation of chalcones in good yield, which is in striking contrast to the behaviour of its sulfide and sulfone counterparts and a hypothetical pathway for this reaction is suggested.
