Intramolecular trapping of an ylide intermediate in the reaction of1:CH2 with an allylic alcohol

The reaction of ¹:CH₂, generated by the photolysis of CH₂N₂, with 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol leads to the formation of several products including 4-methyl-3-penten-1-ol. This product is best explained as the result of rearrangement of an ylide intermediate.
