The Iridium chloride(IrCl3), hydrate (8CI,9CI), with the CAS registry number 14996-61-3, is also known as Iridiumtrichloride hydrate. It belongs to the product categories of Indoles; Classes of Metal Compounds; Ir (Iridium) Compounds and Transition Metal Compounds. Its EINECS registry number is 233-044-6. This chemical's molecular formula is Cl3IrH2O and molecular weight is 316.59. What's more, its systematic name is Iridium(3+) chloride hydrate (1:3:1). This material is relatively rare, but the related hydrate is useful for preparing other iridium compounds. The anhydrous salt is a dark green crystalline solid. It is separated from the other platinum group metals as crystalline ammonium hexachloroiridate(IV), (NH4)2[IrCl6], which can be reduced to iridium metal in a stream of hydrogen. The spongy Ir thus produced reacts with chlorine at 300-400 °C to produce iridium(III) chloride. Iridium chloride(IrCl3), hydrate (8CI,9CI) is used in the laboratory for the preparation of other iridium compounds such as Vaska's complex.
Physical properties about Iridium chloride(IrCl3), hydrate (8CI,9CI) are: (1) #H bond acceptors: 1; (2) #H bond donors: 2; (3) #Freely Rotating Bonds: 0; (4) Density: 5.3 g/cm3; (5) Melting point: 763 °C.
