Phase-Transfer Catalysis (PTC)

PTC is a technique that facilitates the reaction between reagents that are present in different phases, typically a solid and a liquid. In this case, a phase-transfer catalyst is used to shuttle the alkylating agent (usually a solid or an immiscible liquid) from one phase to another, allowing it to react with the iminophosphoglycinates. Common PTC catalysts include quaternary ammonium or phosphonium salts.
