Sulfonation

Following decarboxylation, the α,β-unsaturated compound is treated with a sulfonating reagent. Sulfonation is the introduction of a sulfonate group (-SO3H) into the molecule. This can be achieved by using a suitable sulfonating reagent, which may contain a sulfur dioxide source or other sulfonating groups.
