The Acid Red 51, with the CAS registry number 568-63-8, is also known as Erythrosin B sodium salt. Its EINECS number is 240-474-8. This chemical's molecular formula is C20H6I4Na2O5 and molecular weight is 879.86. What's more, its systematic name is Disodium 2-(2,4,5,7-tetraiodo-6-oxido-3-oxo-3H-xanthen-9-yl)benzoate. It has poor lightfastness and good heat, alkali and bacterial resistance, but it is unstable to acid. It is used as a food coloring, in printing inks, as a biological stain, a dental plaque disclosing agent and a radiopaque medium. It was used as a sensitizer for orthochromatic photographic films. It is also commonly used in sweets such as some candies and popsicles, and even more widely used in cake-decorating gels. It is also used to color pistachio shells. As a food additive, it has the E number E127. This chemical has structural similarity to thyroxine.
Preparation: this chemical can be prepared by iodating fluorescein. Heat and fuse resorcinol, phthalic anhydride and anhydrous zinc chloride, and get crude fluoresce. Refine crude fluoresce with ethanol, and dissolve it in sodium hydroxide solution, then add iodine to react. Add hydrochloric acid to separate crystal, and turn it into sodium salt, and then concentrate the sodium salt.
