1189-85-1 Usage

Chemical Properties

tert-Butyl chromate is a highly flammable, clear, colorless, hygroscopic, corrosive, flammable liquid or red crystals from petroleum ether. Solution in carbon tetrachloride is highly flammable.

Uses

In specialty reactions as a source of Cr; manufacture of catalysts; polymerization of olefins; curing agent for urethane resins

General Description

Liquid.

Air & Water Reactions

Highly flammable. Is hydrolyzed by water.

Reactivity Profile

Unstable except in solution.

Hazard

Toxic by skin absorption. A very powerful oxidizer and dangerous fire hazard. Skin and lower respiratory tract irritant.

Health Hazard

tert-Butyl chromate is expected to cause irritation of the eyes, nose, and skin. Skin contact with tert-butyl chromate caused necrosis of the skin and death of rats.1 In another report exposed rats had an increase in respiratory rate and signs of mild narcosis.

Fire Hazard

Literature sources indicate that tert-Butyl chromate solution in carbon tetrachloride is flammable.

Safety Profile

A very flammable mixture. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid and irritating fumes. See CHROMIUM COMPOUNDS and ESTERS.

Potential Exposure

Butyl chromate is used in specialty reactions as an organic source of chromium; in making catalysts; and as a curing agent for urethane foams

Carcinogenicity

tert-Butyl chromate is considered to be an inferred carcinogen because it is a hexavalent chromium compound.

Shipping

UN3082 Environmentally hazardous substances, liquid, n.o.s., Hazard class: 9; Labels: 9—Miscellaneous hazardous material, Technical Name Required

Incompatibilities

tert-Butyl chromate is a strong oxidizer; reacts violently with reducing agents (such as lithium, sodium, aluminum and their hydrides and hydrazine); combustible materials. Water solutions of tert-butyl chromate react violently with strong bases. Incompatible with strong acids (i.e., hydrochloric, sulfuric and nitric); alcohols, and easily oxidized materials, such as paper, wood, sulfur, aluminum and plastics

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 1189-85-1 includes 7 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 4 digits, 1,1,8 and 9 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 8 and 5 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 1189-85:
(6*1)+(5*1)+(4*8)+(3*9)+(2*8)+(1*5)=91
91 % 10 = 1
So 1189-85-1 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
