An environmentally friendly method is described for the preparation of substituted quinoline and quinoxaline derivatives using Zr(OTf)4 as an efficient catalyst. The method is based on using 1,3-diketones, ketones and 2-aminoaryl ketones under solvent-free conditions and also on using 1,2-diketone, 1,2-diamine in EtOH/H2O at room temperature for quinloine and quinoxaline synthesis, respectively. The advantages in using this method, include its environmental friendliness, simple operating process and good yields.

Kadam, Hari K.,Khan, Salman,Kunkalkar, Rupesh A.,Tilve, Santosh G.
, p. 1003 - 1007 (2013/02/25)
A new simple approach using environmentally benign, cheap, and easily recyclable graphite as a heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of quinoxalines is described. A library of pharmacologically interesting diphenylquinoxalines is prepared by the double condensation of substituted benzils, phenanthrene-9,10-dione, and benzoin with aromatic diamines in 71-93% yields at room temperature in ethanol. Aliphatic diamines gave corresponding dihydropyrazines from substituted benzils in 72-92% yields.

6-Lithioquinoxalines and Their Transformations
Dobrodei,El'tsov
, p. 620 - 629 (2007/10/03)
6-Bromo-2,3-diphenylquinoxaline reacts with butyllithium to give the 6-lithio derivative in a yield of more than 80%, which reacts with electrophiles such as benzophenone, Michler ketone, methyl ethyl ketone, iodine, selenium, and dimethylformamide to give the corresponding quinoxaline derivatives. 6-Bromo-2,3-dimethylquinoxaline is metallated with butyl- and phenyllithium at the methyl groups and benzene ring. These organolithium compounds react with benzophenone to give the corresponding diphenyl- and triaryl-carbinols, whose yield and ratio were determined by HPLC. These results open prospects for preparing new quinoxaline derivatives substituted at the annelated benzene ring.
