A range of substituted nitrobenzenes react with the anion of chloromethyldiphenylphosphinoyl oxide to give the substituted nitrobenzyldiphenylphosphine oxide by vicarious nucleophilic substitution.The novel stereoselective synthesis of E-stilbenes via a one-pot vicarious nucleophilic substitution/Horner-Wittig reaction is described.
