General Description

1H-Isoindol-1-one, 2,3-dihydro-3-hydroxy-2-(1-methyl-1-phenylethyl)-, also known as 3-Hydroxy-2-(1-methyl-1-phenylethyl)isoindolin-1-one, is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C17H17NO2. It is a white to off-white solid that is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and dimethyl sulfoxide. 1H-Isoindol-1-one, 2,3-dihydro-3-hydroxy-2-(1-methyl-1-phenylethyl)- is a synthetic opioid with analgesic properties and is used in the research and development of pharmaceuticals. It binds to and activates the μ-opioid receptor, producing effects similar to morphine, and has potential for use in the treatment of pain and opioid addiction. However, it is also a controlled substance due to its potential for abuse and dependence.

This paper presents a dualistic behavior of 2-substituted-3- hydroxyisoindolones in reactions with sec-butyllithium (sec-BuLi). 2-tert-Butyl-3-hydroxy-2,3-dihydro-1H-isoindol-1-one (1a) treated with sec-BuLi undergoes metalation at position 7.
