supporting information, p. 6387 - 6390 (2021/08/23)
Herein we report a photocatalytic oxidative radical addition reaction for the synthesis of unsymmetrical 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds. This reaction utilizes a desulfurization process to generate electrophilic radicals, which add to α-halogenated alkenes and undergo further oxidation to deliver 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds. This mild and highly efficient method provides a valuable alternative to known strategies.
Asymmetric Nazarov Cyclizations of Unactivated Dienones by Hydrogen-Bond-Donor/Lewis Acid Co–Catalyzed, Enantioselective Proton-Transfer
Metternich, Jan B.,Reiterer, Martin,Jacobsen, Eric N.
supporting information, p. 4092 - 4097 (2020/09/01)
We report an enantioselective Nazarov cyclization catalyzed by chiral hydrogen-bond-donors in concert with silyl Lewis acids. The developed transformation provides access to tri-substituted cyclopentenones in high levels of enantioselectivity (up to 95% e.e.) from a variety of simple unactivated dienones. Kinetic and mechanistic studies are consistent with a reversible 4π-electrocyclization C?C bond-forming step followed by rate- and enantio-determining proton-transfer as the mode of catalysis. The first examples of electrochemical trifluoromethylation and sulfonylation/semipinacol rearrangements of allylic alcohols were developed using cheap and stable RSO2Na (R = CF3, Ph) as reagents. Various β-trifluoromethyl and sulfonated ketones were obtained in moderate to excellent yields. This strategy provides a facile, direct, and complementary approach to construct all-carbon quaternary stereocenters. In addition, the reaction has the advantages of being chemical oxidant-free and metal-free and has safe and mild reaction conditions.

Azides are building blocks of increasing importance in synthetic chemistry, chemical biology, and materials science. Azidobenziodoxolone (ABX, Zhdankin reagent) is a valuable azide source, but its safety profile has not been thoroughly established. Herein, we report a safety study of ABX, which shows its hazardous nature. We introduce two derivatives, tBu-ABX and ABZ (azidobenziodazolone), with a better safety profile, and use them in established photoredox- and metal-mediated azidations, and in a new ring-expansion of silylated cyclobutanols to give azidated cyclopentanones.

A catalytic intermolecular semipinacol rearrangement induced by allylic carbocations has been realized. This tandem reaction is highly efficient under the catalysis of ZnBr2, generating a wide range of α-homoallyl substituted ketones which contain all-carbon quaternary centres in good to excellent yields (up to 98%) with moderate to high diastereoselectivities (up to >20?:?1). Synthetic application of this novel methodology in the construction of core structures of natural products is also reported.

supporting information, p. 4227 - 4230 (2018/07/29)
A new and modular electrophilic trifluoromethylthiolation/semipinacol rearrangement of allylic silyl ethers has been developed under mild conditions. This approach allows the formation of a number of β-SCF3 carbonyl compounds with a cyclic and all-carbon quaternary center framework in moderate to good yields. It should be noted that this achievement is a metal-free process and just requires the use of simple acetyl chloride as an acidic promoter. Additionally, an interesting H-migration in competition with aryl-migration process was revealed.
Synthesis of Ketones and Esters from Heteroatom-Functionalized Alkenes by Cobalt-Mediated Hydrogen Atom Transfer
Ma, Xiaoshen,Herzon, Seth B.
, p. 8673 - 8695 (2016/10/17)
Cobalt bis(acetylacetonate) is shown to mediate hydrogen atom transfer to a broad range of functionalized alkenes; in situ oxidation of the resulting alkylradical intermediates, followed by hydrolysis, provides expedient access to ketones and esters. By modification of the alcohol solvent, different alkyl ester products may be obtained. The method is compatible with a number of functional groups including alkenyl halides, sulfides, triflates, and phosphonates and provides a mild and practical alternative to the Tamao-Fleming oxidation of vinylsilanes and the Arndt-Eistert homologation.

supporting information, p. 8702 - 8706 (2016/10/03)
Pd-Catalyzed C(sp3)-C(sp2) cross-coupling of Y(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2 with vinyl bromides and triflates has been developed for efficient synthesis of various allyltrimethylsilanes. The cross-coupling reaction was conducted at room temperature with low catalyst loading of either Pd(PPh3)4 or Pd(PPh3)2Cl2, and exhibited high efficiency and a broad substrate scope. In combination with the cross-coupling by the Lewis-acid catalyzed Hosomi-Sakurai reaction, a novel three-component one-pot cascade reaction was then accomplished to deliver homoallylic alcohols and ethers with high regioselectivity and diastereoselectivity. The three-component reaction defined the yttrium complex as a novel one-carbon synthon, which could either trigger bifunctionalization of alkenes or link two electrophiles and would find applications in organic synthesis.
Expedient Access to 2,3-Dihydropyridines from Unsaturated Oximes by Rh(III)-Catalyzed C-H Activation

supporting information, p. 8892 - 8895 (2015/08/03)
α,β-Unsaturated oxime pivalates are proposed to undergo reversible C(sp2)-H insertion with cationic Rh(III) complexes to furnish five-membered metallacycles. In the presence of 1,1-disubstituted olefins, these species participate in irreversible migratory insertion to give, after reductive elimination, 2,3-dihydropyridine products in good yields. Catalytic hydrogenation can then be used to convert these molecules into piperidines, which are important structural components of numerous pharmaceuticals.
