, (2021)
Among the six alkyldiphenylmethanol derivatives assessed in this study, five showed persistent room temperature phosphorescence (pRTP), whereas the original diphenylmethanol (DPhHOH) did not. pRTP is a unique luminescence phenomenon that appears only in t

Photocatalytic nucleophilic addition of alcohols to styrenes in Markovnikov and anti-Markovnikov orientation
Weiser, Martin,Hermann, Sergej,Penner, Alexander,Wagenknecht, Hans-Achim
, p. 568 - 575 (2015/06/08)
The nucleophilic addition of methanol and other alcohols to 1,1-diphenylethylene (1) and styrene (6) into the Markovnikov- and anti-Markovnikov-type products was selectively achieved with 1-(N,N-dimethylamino)pyrene (Py) and 1,7-dicyanoperylene-3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic acid bisimide (PDI) as photoredox catalysts. The regioselectivity was controlled by the photocatalyst. For the reductive mode towards the Markovnikov-type regioselectivity, Py was applied as photocatalyst and triethylamine as electron shuttle. This approach was also used for intramolecular additions. For the oxidative mode towards the anti-Markovnikov-type regioselectivety, PDI was applied together with Ph-SH as additive. Photocatalytic additions of a variety of alcohols gave the corresponding products in good to excellent yields. The proposed photocatalytic electron transfer mechanism was supported by detection of the PDI radical anion as key intermediate and by comparison of two intramolecular reactions with different electron density. Representative mesoflow reactor experiments allowed to significantly shorten the irradiation times and to use sunlight as "green"light source.

A novel and efficient allylic alkylation reaction between π-activated ethers and allylsilane was realized under mild conditions through iron(III)-catalyzed C sp 3-O ether bond cleavage. The present protocol provides an attractive approach for the construction of sp3-sp3 C-C bonds and can be potentially applied for the selective reduction of benzyl and allyl ethers to their corresponding hydrocarbon compounds by using triethylsilane as a hydride-transfer reagent. A mild, economical, and environmentally friendly method for the construction of C sp 3-C sp 3 bonds through iron-catalyzed π-activated C-O ether bond cleavage is developed. In addition, this catalytic system can be used for the selective reduction of benzylic and allylic C-O ether bonds to C-H bonds. Copyright

Chemical photocatalysis with 1-(N, N-dimethylamino)pyrene

, p. 2803 - 2807 (2013/02/22)
1-(N,N-Dimethylamino)pyrene was applied as chemical photocatalyst for two different organic reactions: Both the photocatalytically driven nucleophilic addition of methanol to 1,1-diphenylethylene and the photocatalytic deprotection of N-phenylsulfonylindole gave the corresponding products in good yields and in a highly sustainable way after short irradiation with high-power LED. This concept can potentially be transferred to other photochemical reactions. Copyright
The photochemistry of 4-halobenzonitriles and 4-haloanisoles with 1,1-diphenyiethene in methanol. Homolytic cleavage versus electron-transfer pathways
Mangion, Dino,Arnold, Donald R.
, p. 1655 - 1670 (2007/10/03)
The photochemical reactivity of a series of 4-halobenzonitriles and 4-haloanisoles with 1,1-diphenylethene in a nucleophilic solvent (methanol) has been investigated. Analysis of the photochemical reactions involving the 4-halobenzonitriles revealed formation of alkene-methanol adducts, such as 1-methoxy-2,2-diphenylethane, 1-methoxy-2,2-diphenylethene, and 1,1-dimethoxy-2,2-diphenylethane, indicative of a photochemical electron-transfer mechanism. These products were not significant in the photochemical reactions involving the 4-haloanisoles. Both the 4-halobenzonitriles and the 4-haloanisoles produced an 'arene-alkene-methanol Markovnikov adduct, 1-aryl-2-methoxy-2,2-diphenylethane (aryl = 4-cyanophenyl or 4-methoxyphenyl). This compound was shown to undergo an acid-catalysed elimination to 1-aryl-2,2-diphenylethene under the reaction conditions, which subsequently underwent a 6π-electrocyclization to the 3-substituted(cyano or methoxy)-9-phenylphenanthrene. Possible mechanisms for the observed reactivity are discussed and evaluated.

Photochemistry of 3H-indazoles in protic media. Benzyl cations via protonation of 2-methylene-3,5-cyclohexadienylidenes

, p. 5887 - 5890 (2007/10/02)
Photolysis of 3,3-disubstituted 3H-indazoles in protic media (ROH) gives rise to benzyl ethers, in addition to hydrocarbons (derivatives of benzocyclopropene, styrene, and fluorene) which are also found in aprotic solvents. In the presence of ROD, the benzyl ethers are formed with incorporation of deuterium into the ortho position, pointing to protonation of 2-methylene-3,5-cyclohexadienylidenes. Laser flash photolysis of 3H-indazoles generates diazo compounds and benzyl cations as transient intermediates.
Single and double reductive cleavage of C-O bonds of aromatic dimethyl acetals and ketals: Generation of benzylic mono- and dicarbanions
Azzena,Melloni,Pisano,Sechi
, p. 6759 - 6762 (2007/10/02)
The reductive cleavage of aromatic dimethyl acetals and ketals, 1, with Li metal in THF at low temperature allows the generation of stable α-alkoxy-α-arylsubstituted carbanions, avoiding the Wittig rearrangement. Reaction of these carbanions with various electrophiles afforded the expected products 2. Further in situ reaction of compounds 2 afforded the products of reductive electrophilic disubstitution, 3.
