Amide synthesis is one of the most crucial transformations in chemistry and biology. Among various catalytic systems, N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-based ruthenium (Ru) catalyst systems have been proven to be active for direct synthesis of amides by sustainable acceptorless dehydrogenative Coupling of primary alcohols with amines. Most often, these catalytic systems usually use monodentate NHC and thus require an additional ligand to obtain high reactivity and selectivity. In this work, a series of cationic Ru(II)(η6-p-cymene) complexes with thioether-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene ligands (imidazole and benzimidazole-based) have been prepared and fully characterized. These complexes have then been used in the amidation reaction and the most promising one (i. e. 3 c) has been applied on a large range of substrates. High conversions albeit with moderate yields have generally been obtained.

Herein, we develop a mild method for N-acylation of primary and secondary amines with α-diketones induced by ultraviolet (UV) light. Forty-six examples with various functional groups are explored at room temperature with irradiation by three 26 W UV lamps (350-380 nm). The yield reaches 97%. The gram scale experiment product yield is 76%. Moreover, this system can be applied to the synthesis of several amino acid derivatives. Mechanistic studies show that benzoin is generated in situ from benzil under UV irradiation.

A new triethyl phosphite/benzoyl peroxide (BPO) mediated system has been developed for the synthesis of secondary amides with good to excellent yields in a single step. This unprecedented cascade process involves sequential reduction of N–O bond and benzoylation followed by dealkylation of N–C bond of O-benzoylhydroxylamines (O-BHA). The methodology is versatile as it tolerates a variety of aromatic and aliphatic O-BHA as substrates to access secondary amides.
A novel oxidative procedure for the synthesis of benzamides from styrenes and amines under metal-free conditions

An interesting procedure for the oxidative synthesis of amides from styrenes and amines has been developed. Various primary amides were formed in moderate yields (25-81%). Secondary amides can be produced in moderate yields as well (41-68%). Notably, no transition metal catalyst was needed for this transformation. This is the first example of oxidative transformation of styrenes to benzamides. This journal is the Partner Organisations 2014.

An efficient and simple method for the transamidation of carboxamides, phthalimide, ureas and thioamide with amines catalyzed by commercially available benzoic acid under metal-free conditions is described. Furthermore, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report about the transamidation of an aromatic thioamide with amines.
Electrochemical deoxygenation of aromatic amides and sulfoxides

The electrochemical deoxygenation of a broad range of aromatic amides was achieved under mild conditions on lead cathodes. Under the optimized reaction conditions, acetal, thienyl, and ether moieties are tolerated. Furthermore, the reduction protocol can be applied to aromatic and aliphatic sulfoxides to obtain the corresponding sulfides. For both aromatic amides and sulfoxides, the deoxygenation reaction ensues without the use of expensive catalysts or hazardous reducing agents. Owing to the high selectivity of the process, simple extraction is sufficient to isolate the product from the substrate. The straightforward purification protocol, the coformation of water, and the use of electric current instead of reducing agents render our method environmentally friendly and economically beneficial.
