It is a colorless, flammable liquid with a strong, unpleasant odor. This molecule consists of a butane chain with a vinyl group (C=C) attached to the first carbon atom and a sulfanyl group (-SH) attached to the same carbon. 1-(Ethenylsulfanyl)butane is used as a synthetic intermediate in the production of various chemicals, such as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and fragrances. It is also employed as a reagent in organic synthesis and as a solvent. Due to its pungent smell, it is sometimes used as a warning agent in natural gas to detect leaks.
