The reaction of Li2[C(PPh2NSiMe3) 2] with elemental tellurium in THF was carried out in an attempt to generate the tellurocarbonyl dianion [TeC(PPh2NSiMe3) 2]2- as the dilithium derivative. This thermally unstable tridentate ligand was characterized by 31P and 7Li NMR spectroscopy. Attempted recrystallization gave yellow crystals, which were shown by X-ray crystallography to be a neutral, centrosymmetric complex comprised of two molecules of the novel telluroketone [TeC(PPh2NSiMe 3)2] stabilized by N,Te,N coordination to LiOLi units of the rhombic dodecahedral cluster [Li8(μ5-O) 2(μ5-OH)4(C4H8O) 4].

The reaction of [CH2(PPh2=NSiMe3)(PPh 2=E)] (E = S (1), NSiMe3 (2)) with Mg(Bun) 2 in refiuxing toluene afforded the magnesium bis(phosphoranyl) methanediide complexes [{(PPh2=NSiMe3)(PPh 2=E)}CMgl2 (E = S (3), NSiMe3 (4)), respectively. The X-ray structures and DFT calculations of 3 and 4 show that they are bimetallic methanediide complexes of magnesium containing a strong Mg-Cmethaiiediide electrostatic bonding. Treatment of 4 with water in toluene gave 2 and the magnesium hydroxide complex [HC(PPh2= NSiMe3)2Mg(μ-OH)]2 (5), confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The reaction of 1 with AlMe3 in refiuxing toluene afforded the aluminum bis(phosphoranyl)methanediide complex [{(PPh 2=NSiMe3)(PPh2=S)}CAlMe]2 (6). The X-ray structure of 6 shows that a methanediide carbon is bonded to one aluminum atom. DFT calculations of 6 demonstrate that Al-Cmsthanediide ls highly polar with weak covalent bonding, consistent with the topological analysis of electron densities of 6.
