Rac 8α-[Δ-5(10)]-Norgestrel, also known as Norgestrel, is a synthetic progestin hormone derived from the parent compound 19-nortestosterone. It is a key component in various contraceptive formulations, including oral contraceptive pills, patches, and vaginal rings, due to its potent progestogenic activity. Norgestrel works by inhibiting ovulation, altering the cervical mucus to prevent sperm penetration, and modifying the endometrium to reduce the likelihood of implantation. It is also used in hormone replacement therapy and emergency contraception. As a racemic mixture, it contains equal parts of the (+) and (-) enantiomers, which may have different pharmacological effects.
