Mononuclear and tetranuclear palladium complexes with functionalized "abnormal"N-heterocyclic carbene (aNHC) ligands based on 3-phenylimidazo[1,5-a]pyridine were synthesized. All of the new complexes were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The new complexes were applied in the Mizoroki-Heck coupling reaction of aryl chlorides with alkenes in neat n-tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB). The mononuclear palladium complex with a tridentate phenoxy- and amidate-functionalized aNHC ligand displayed activity superior to that of the palladium complex with a bidentate amidate-functionalized aNHC ligand. The new tetranuclear complex with the tridentate ligand displayed the best activities, capable of the activation of deactivated aryl chlorides as substrates with a low Pd atom loading. Even challenging sterically demanding ortho-substituted aryl chlorides were successfully utilized as substrates. The studies revealed that the robustness of the catalyst precursor is crucial in delivering high catalytic activities. Also, the promising use of tetranuclear palladium complexes with functionalized aNHC ligands as the catalyst precursors in the Mizoroki-Heck coupling reaction in neat TBAB was demonstrated.

Sugar-based imidazolium salts (IMSs) represent an outstanding type of material making them eye-catching for a wide variety of applications. Herein, a series of glucoside-based IMSs (Glu-IMSs) combining glucoside and imidazolium head groups with different substituents were synthesized. The catalytic activities of these Glu-IMSs were evaluated by Pd-catalyzed Heck–Mizoroki and Suzuki–Miyaura reactions in water. Among them, the Glu-IMSs contain both –OH and NHCs coordination sites was found to be the most efficient ancillary ligand in comparison with other Glu-IMSs with just single NHCs coordination site. The HR-TEM analysis showed that the palladium nanoparticles stabilized by the Glu-IMSs with an average size of ~4.0 nm was formed in the reaction system, which may be act as an efficient real catalytic species. Under the optimized reaction conditions, a series of novel fluorine-cored organic small molecule functional materials were synthesized with favorable yields.

Two series of electron-rich metal (Ni and Pd) complexes, namely a pyridine-coordinated tridentate NHC/amidate/phenoxy metal complex and a tetradentate complex bearing an extra pyridyl group, were synthesized. Two carbene moieties, imidazole-based and benzimidazole-based NHCs, were also incorporated into the ligand backbones. Seven of the new complexes were structurally characterized and comparative structural analysis revealed that the tetradentate complex with a flanking pyridyl side-arm was less distorted, leading to chelation-assisted stronger NHC coordination and hence a shorter metal–carbene bond. The catalytic activities of the two sets of palladium complexes for the Mizoroki–Heck coupling reaction were investigated. The comparative data showed that despite the higher thermal stability and the presence of the flanking hemilabile pyridyl side-arm which provided unsaturation to the metal center, the catalytic performance was slightly inferior to that of the tridentate palladium complex with a “throw-away” pyridine ligand. The tridentate palladium complex with the benzimidazole-based NHC moiety was the most effective catalyst, allowing the utilization of a range of aryl chlorides including deactivated substrates with a low 0.2 mol-% Pd loading in molten n-tetrabutylammonium bromide.

Based on the ligand scaffold of an imidazolyl/benziimidazolyl moiety and a N-CH2C(=O)NHPh substituent, two series of ligand precursors with ortho hydroxy groups incorporated on the N-phenyl rings were prepared. The structural fine tuning of the ligand scaffold allowed the synthesis of tetranuclear palladium complexes with abnormal N-heterocyclic carbene (aNHC) ligands. For precursors with C2-methyl blocking groups, pyridine-assisted C?H bond activation led to the formation of mononuclear tridentate palladium aNHC complexes or tetranuclear complexes with tridentate CNO donors. Representative mononuclear and tetranuclearpalladium aNHC complexes were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction studies, revealing very short Pd?C bond distances. The tetranuclear palladium aNHC complexes were very effective in catalyzing Mizoroki-Heck coupling reaction, and were capable of employing a range of aryl chlorides including deactivated substrates with low palladium loading of 0.2 mol%. The Suzuki-Miyaura (SM) cross-coupling is the most broadly utilized Pd-catalyzed C-C bond-forming reaction in the chemical industry. A large proportion of SM couplings employ dipolar aprotic solvents; however, current sustainability initiatives and increasingly stringent regulations advocate the use of alternatives that exhibit more desirable properties. Here we describe the scope and utility of the bio-derived solvent Cyrene in SM cross-couplings and evaluate its suitability as a reaction medium for this benchmark transformation from discovery to gram scale.

Palladium-catalyzed bond-forming reactions, such as the ?-Suzuki-Miyaura and Mizoroki-Heck reactions, are some of the most broadly utilized reactions within the chemical industry. These reactions frequently employ hazardous solvents; however, to adhere to increasing sustainability pressures and restrictions regarding the use of such solvents, alternatives are highly sought after. Here we demonstrate the utility of dimethyl isosorbide (DMI) as a bio-derived solvent in several benchmark Pd-catalyzed reactions: Suzuki-Miyaura (13 examples, 62-100% yield), Mizoroki-Heck (13 examples, 47-91% yield), and Sonogashira (12 examples, 65-98% yield).

Three PEG-functionalized imidazolium salts L1-L3 were designed and prepared from commercially available materials via a simple method. Their corresponding water soluble Pd-NHC catalysts, in situ generated from the imidazolium salts L1-L3 and Na2PdCl4 in water, showed impressive catalytic activity for aqueous Mizoroki-Heck reactions. The kinetic study revealed that the Pd catalyst derived from the imidazolium salt L1, bearing a pyridine-2-methyl substituent at the N3 atom of the imidazole ring, showed the best catalytic activity. Under the optimal conditions, a wide range of substituted alkenes were achieved in good to excellent yields from various aryl bromides and alkenes with the catalyst TON of up to 10,000.

In this paper, the synthesis of a cheap, reusable and ligand-free Pd catalyst supported on MgAl layered double hydroxides (Pd/MgAl-LDHs) by co-precipitation and reduction methods is described. The catalyst was used in Heck reactions under highspeed ball milling (HSBM) conditions at room temperature. The effects of milling-ball size, milling-ball filling degree, reaction time, rotation speed and grinding auxiliary category, which would influence the yields of mechanochemical Heck reactions, were investigated in detail. The characterization results of XRD, ICP-MS and XPS suggest that Pd/MgAl-LDHs have excellent textural properties with zero-valence Pd on its layers. The reaction results indicate that the catalyst could be utilized in HSBM systems to afford a wide range of Heck coupling products in satisfactory yields. Furthermore, this catalyst could be easily recovered and reused for at least five times without significant loss of catalytic activity.

A micron-scale palladium(II) material has been successfully prepared using Schiff base-modified hexagonal boron nitride as a support and used for the first time as an efficient and recyclable catalyst in organic synthesis. The morphology, composition, metal loading and thermal stability of the catalyst were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and thermogravimetric (TG) analyses. Then, the micron material was tested in various C–C cross-coupling reactions and exhibited excellent catalytic activities in the Suzuki and Heck reactions. Moreover, the catalyst could be easily recovered by simple filtration and reused at least ten times without significant loss of its catalytic activity. In general, this work demonstrates the possibility of using Schiff-base@hexagonal boron nitride as an efficient support for heterogeneous catalysts. (Figure presented.).

An environmentally friendly palladium(II) catalyst supported on cyclodextrin-modified h-BN was successfully prepared. The catalyst was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TG, XRD and XPS, and the loading level of Pd in h-BN@β-CD@Pd(II) was measured to be 0.088?mmol g?1 by ICP. It exhibits excellent catalytic activity for the Suzuki and Heck reactions in water, and can be easily separated and consecutively reused for at least nine times. In addition, a series of pharmacologically interesting products were successfully synthesized using this catalyst to demonstrate its potential applications in pharmaceutical industries. Above all, this work opens up an interesting and attractive avenue for the use of cyclodextrin-functionalized h-BN as an efficient support for hydrophilic heterogeneous catalysts.
