The molecular structure of the precursor compound trans-[RuCl 2(dmso)(terpy)] for [Ru(terpy)]2+ containing complexes was determined for the trihydrate (terpy = 2,2′:6′,2″- terpyridine). The molecule exhibits S-bonded DMSO with the S=O bond in the Ru(η3-terpy) plane and axially positioned chloride ligands. Electrochemical studies of the cis/trans reaction product mixture in dichloromethane showed two oxidation processes for the reversible Ru II/III transitions but irreversible reduction. Only one reversible oxidation wave and a uniform 1H-NMR spectrum were observed for the isolated product in case of the related [RuCl2(dmso)(mtpy)] (mtpy = 4′-(4-methylphenyl)-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine), the electrochemical, NMR and S=O vibrational stretching values allowed us to identify this product as the trans isomer.
