PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently benzylate a hydroxy tricarboxylic acid.SOLUTION: A method for benzylating a hydroxy tricarboxylic acid comprises reacting a hydroxy tricarboxylic acid or a derivative thereof with a benzyl halide in the presence of an amine. The hydroxy tricarboxylic acid is a compound having three carboxyl groups in the molecule and having a hydroxyl group in at least one position of the γ-position and the δ-position of the carboxyl group.
