, p. 561 - 566 (2015)
Asymmetrical diaryl or aryl alkyl thioethers can be prepared in good to excellent yields by coupling the appropriate aryl iodides and aryl or alkyl bromines using acetyl thiourea as a thiolprecursor, Cu2O as a catalyst, KOH as a base, and PEG 400-H2O as a solvent under ligand-free conditions.

An air-stable μ-oxo-bridged binuclear Lewis acid of titanium(IV) salophen perfluorobutanesulfonate [{Ti(salophen)H2O}2O][OSO2C4F9]2 (1) was successfully synthesized by the reaction of TiIV(salophen)Cl2 with AgOSO2C4F9 and characterized by techniques such as IR, NMR and HRMS. This complex was stable open to air over a year, and exhibited good thermal stability and high solubility in polar organic solvents. The complex also had relatively strong acidity with a strength of 0.8 Ho ≤ 3.3, and showed high catalytic efficiency towards various C–S and C–Se bond formations in the presence of zinc power. This catalytic system affords a mild and efficient approach to synthesis of thio- and selenoesters, α-arylthio- and seleno-carbonyl compounds, and thio- and selenoethers.

The classical Ullmann C-S cross coupling reaction of aryl iodides with aromatic/alkyl thiols under catalysis of 15 mol% Cu(OAc)2· H2O and 15 mol% 2,2′-biimidazole works at 80°C in DMSO for 3 h to provide a variety of aryl sulfides in good to excellent yields. Syntheses of the alkyl, cycloalkyl and aryl 2-aminophenyl sulfones 10 were achieved by oxidation of the corresponding 2-nitrophenyl sulfides 7 to the 2-nitrophenyl sulfones 9 followed by ethanolic Bechamp-reduction.The sulfides 7 in turn were obtained by either reactions of 2-nitro-thiophenol (8) with the appropriate alkyl and cycloalkyl halides or of 2-chloro-nitrobenzene (5) with the relevant thiols.Condensation of 2-nitrobenzenesulfinic acid (3) with bromoacetic acid in aqueous alkaline solution led - presumably via 2-nitrophenylsulfonylacetic acid (4) - to methyl2-nitrophenyl sulfone (1), reduction of which gave 2-aminophenyl methyl sulfone (2).Treatment of 2-aminothiophenol (11) with t-butyl alcohol in aqueous sulfuric acid gave 2-aminophenyl t-butyl sulfide (12), which was acetylated to o-t-butylthio-acetanilide (13).Oxidation of the latter to o-t-butylsulfonyl-acetanilide (14) followed by hydrolysis led to 2-aminophenyl t-butyl sulfone (15).
