Li, Luomo,Hilt, Gerhard
supporting information, p. 11221 - 11225 (2021/06/25)
The transfer-hydrogenation as well as the regioselective and regiodivergent addition of H?D from regiospecific deuterated dihydroaromatic compounds to a variety of 1,1-di- and trisubstituted alkenes was realised with InBr3 in dichloro(m)ethane. In comparison with the previously reported BF3?Et2O-catalysed process, electron-deficient aryl-substituents can be applied reliably and thereby several restrictions could be lifted, and new types of substrates could be transformed successfully in hydrodeuterogenation as well as deuterohydrogenation transfer-hydrogenation reactions.

Simple and efficient methods were developed for sp2-sp3 and sp3-sp3 C-C bond-activation reactions of 2-substituted 1,3-diketones. 3-Substituted 3-bromopentane-2,4-diones were deacylated in the presence of an aromatic compound and a silica gel supported Bronsted acid containing sulfonic groups. The carbocation formed by cleavage of the sp3-sp3 C-C bond of the dione alkylated the aromatic compound.

Friedel-Crafts benzylations between unactivated arenes and benzyl alcohol derivatives are clean and straightforward processes to construct biologically useful di- and triarylmethanes. We have established an efficient iron-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts benzylation method at room temperature that uses benzyl TMS ethers as substrates, which are poorly reactive under common nucleophilic substitution conditions. The reaction seems to progress through iron-catalyzed self-condensation of the benzyl TMS ether to the corresponding dibenzylic ether. The use of excess arene relative to benzyl TMS ether produced mono-benzylated arene (diand tri-arylmethane products), whereas the use of excess benzyl TMS ether versus arene provided bis-benzylated arene (polyarylated products) in high yields and regioselectivities. In previous methods, the latter double Friedel-Crafts benzylations hardly proceed.
A Lewis acid mediated schmidt reaction of benzylic azide: Synthesis of sterically crowded aromatic tertiary amines

, p. 5297 - 5302 (2011/11/12)
An efficient one-pot synthesis of sterically hindered aromatic tertiary amines through Lewis acid induced intermolecular Schmidt reaction of benzylic azides is described. In the presence of EtAlCl2, benzylic azide underwent a smooth Schmidt reaction to give the corresponding iminium ion, which, upon reduction with NaBH4 in situ, afforded the tertiary amine. The effects of substituents on the aromatic ring and the steric effects of the alkyl side chain have also been studied.
Microwave-accelerated alkylation of arenes/heteroarenes with benzylic alcohols using antimony(III) chloride as catalyst: Synthesis of O-heterocycles

supporting information; experimental part, p. 1585 - 1591 (2011/08/03)
An efficient protocol for alkylation of electron-rich arenes/heteroarenes with benzylic alcohols under microwave irradiation using antimony(III) chloride as catalyst has been developed. The mild reaction conditions, high yields, operational simplicity, and applicability to various substrates render the approach a useful route for the synthesis of diaryl/triarylalkane. In addition, a new route for the conversion of ortho-alkenylated phenols into functionalized O-heterocycles has been accomplished. Georg Thieme Verlag Stuttgart ? New York.

experimental part, p. 1096 - 1100 (2009/04/04)
A novel InCl3/SiO2-catalyzed hydroarylation of various styrenes with arenes has been developed. The reaction can be carried out under solvent-free conditions to afford a series of 1,1-diarylalkanes in high yields and with good regioselectivities. The catalyst can be reused six times without obvious loss of catalytic activity. Georg Thieme Verlag Stuttgart.
Process for the preparation of substituted phenols
-
Page/Page column 14, (2008/12/08)
A substituted phenolic compound is prepared by oxidizing a substituted diarylethane compound with oxygen in the presence of a nitrogen-containing cyclic compound, and treating the oxidized product with an acid. The nitrogen-containing cyclic compound includes, as a constituent of its ring, a skeleton represented by following Formula (I): wherein X is oxygen atom or an -OR group, where R is hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl-protecting group. The substituted diarylethane compound is represented by following Formula (1): wherein each of Ring Ar1 and Ring Ar2 is independently a monocyclic or polycyclic aromatic carbocyclic ring; Y1 is an electron-donating group; Y2 is an electron-withdrawing group; "p" is an integer of 1 or more; and "q" is an integer of 0 or more. The substituted phenolic compound is represented by following Formula (2): wherein Ring Ar1, Y1, and "p" are as defined above.
