Camphorquinone arylhydrazones have been separated into geometric isomers, whose structure has been established by spectral methods.The barrier to Z,E isomerazation decreases when the polarity of the solvent is increased and when electrondonor substituents are introduced into the benzene ring.The isomerization is realized according to a mechanism of rotation as a result of the polarization of the C=N bond with an increase in electron density on the carbon atom.
