Condensation of ethyl 1-benzenesulphonyl-5-methoxy-2-methyl-indole-3-carboxylate (2) with ethyl benzoate in the presence of potassium t-butoxide in dimethyl sulphoxide gives 1,2-di(3-carbethoxy-5-mehoxyindol-2-yl)ethane (3).A plausible mechanism involving a novel 1,6-eliminaion of benzenesulphinic acid is proposed.
