Reductive Fragmentation of Benzaldehyde N-Benzhydrylimines with Sodium in Dry Dioxane

The reaction of sodium with substituted benzaldehydeimines in dry dioxane followed by treatment with water gives decomposition products of imines.The intervention of anionic intermediates has been shown by substituent labelling and use of a trapping agent.The products have been characterised on the basis of elemental analyses, IR and PMR spectral data and their identity confirmed by comparison with authentic samples.
