The process involves reaction of compound of formula (II) with sodium acetate in presence of catalytic amount of potassium iodide in dimethyl formamide solvent at 25-30°C to give 5-methyl-2-oxo-1,3-dioxol-4-yl)methyl acetate (IV) which was further Acid hydrolysed by IPA. HCl in Isopropyl alcohol solvent to yield 4-(hydroxymethyl)-5-methyl-1,3-dioxol-2-one (I).
