- A comparative study of branched and linear dialkyl phthalate plasticizer surface levels and their effects on adhesive bonds in flexible PVC. Ernes, D. A.; Garg, B. K.; Williams, R. C. (B. F. Goodrich Chem. Group, Avon Lake Tech. Cent., Avon Lake, OH 44012, USA). J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 29(1), 383-97 (English) 1984. CODEN: JAPNAB. ISSN: 0021-8995. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 37 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) Section cross-reference(s): 38 A method was developed to quant. measure the surface plasticizer levels present on test plaques made from a plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (I) [9002-86-2]. The plaque fabrication conditions were chosen so that the plaque closely models an extruded flexible I profile. The anal. method utilizes sorption of the surface plasticizer on fumed SiO2, followed by MeOH extn. and liq. chromatog. identification and quantitation of the plasticizer. Typical results are presented for a model compn. plasticized with either bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (II) [117-81-7] or a mixt. contg. predominantly linear C7, C9, and C11 dialkyl phthalates (DHNUP). The effect of compn. work level, as measured by Banbury drop temp. and final processing temp., was also studied. These results show that, for the model compn. studied, the av. surface level of DHNUP is always greater than that of II. The II levels are essentially independent of the compn. work level. The DHNUP levels generally increase with increasing mold temps. Finally, these data were correlated with a study of the lifetime of a Neoprene-based adhesive bond to II- and DHNUP-plasticized flexible I in a 100° oven.Except for chemicals metioned above, 9002-86-2 and 88-99-3 are also used. These studies clearly show that a one-to-one substitution of II for DHNUP will increase the time to adhesive bond failure by a factor of 3 10 with this particular adhesive adhesive system and model compn. .

DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 37 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) Section cross-reference(s): 38 The title material, effective over a wide frequency and temp. range, comprises 100 parts mixt. of plasticized PVC [9002-86-2] and vinyl ester-olefin copolymer and 340 parts powd. inorg. compd. of high sp. gr. Thus, a compn. of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer [24937-78-8] [Mooney ML1+4 viscosity (100°) 25] 50, :3 PVC-dioctyl phthalate [117-81-7]-stabilizer compn. 50, and suzorite mica 605 70 parts was roll milled to give a 1.5-mm sheet having a very high loss factor over a wide temp. range. .
