DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 50 (Propellants and Explosives) Electron paramagnetic studies of UV- and thermally decompd. TNT [118-96-7] in the condensed phase show the presence of a triplet spectrum due to an unpaired electron interacting with a N nucleus. The components of the axially sym. g and A tensor are: A^ = 4.0 G, Aw = 27.0G, g^ = 2.007, and gw = 2.003. When the decompd. TNT is dissolved in C6H6, a spectrum with the same spin Hamiltonian parameters is obtained, but a further hyperfine interaction with 5 equiv H nuclei is obsd. Spectra having the same parameters were also obsd. when 3,4,5-trinitrotoluene [603-15-6] and 2,4-dinitrotoluene [121-14-2] were dissolved in C6H6 after decompn. The spectra are assigned to a radical having an unpaired electron localized on an NO group formed by the removal of an O+ from the NO2 group of TNT. An irreversible decrease of the isotropic hyperfine splitting with the N nucleus was obsd. with increasing temp. in the molten phase of TNT. The possible role of this radical in the thermal initiation of explosion is discussed. .

The reactivity of the dinitro compds. decreased in the sequence: m-dinitrobenzene [99-65-0] < 2,4-dinitrotoulene [121-14-2] < 1,3-dimethyl-4,6-dinitrobenzene [616-72-8] .apprx. dinitromesitylene [608-50-4] < 1,4-dinitrobenzene [100-25-4] .apprx. 3,6-dinitro-1,2,4,5-tetramethylbenzene [5465-13-4]. .
