MeOH and hexane, and injected into a high-performance liq. chromatograph equipped with an electrochem detector for the detn. of estrone [53-16-7], estradiol [50-28-2], 2-hydroxyestrone [362-06-1], and 2-hydroxyestradiol [362-05-0] (as free or methoxylated compds.). The mean recovery rate was 45.0-95.3%, the interassay relative std. deviation was 2.3-9.%, and the detection limit was 47.6-156.2 pg/mL. The calibration plot (peak height vs. concn.) was linear to 2 ng. Plasma levels of catecholestrogens and derivs. (2-hydroxyestrone, 2-methoxyestrone [362-08-3], 2-methoxyestradiol [362-07-2] and 3-methoxyestrone [1624-62-0]) in women during 4-42 wks of pregnancy under various conditions (preeclampsia, twin pregnancy, aortic syndrome, diabetes) are presented. The metab. of catecholestrogens during normal and abnormal pregnancy is discussed.

The selective effect of EME at site 3 of phosphorylation, which resembled that of oligomycin, contrasted with the combined inhibition of electron and energy transfer induced by steroids at other sites of the mitochondrial electron transport system.
