The amts. of differently org.-linked N in soil org. matter such as a-amino- and amide-N, the N content of alk. exts. and its humic acid fraction as well as the inorg. forms of N were detd. The formation of org. forms of N increases with the addn. of wheat straw. The more org. material was decompd., the more amino N could be detected, and the smaller became the amide-amino-N-ratio in the immobilized urea part. Also the formation of unidentified N in the hydrolyzate and the non-hydrolyzable N is intensified by the addn. of straw. Without the addn. of straw the amide N part of urea 15N mainly increases with increasing addn. of urea. In the case of addn. of straw the higher content of 15N from urea in the org. materials extd. with alk. soln. is caused by the the higher 15N content of the corresponding humic acid fractions. N-serve promotes the formation of org. forms of N, with a relative high increase of unidentified N in the hydrolyzate.

Maize cultivars were grown under different rates of N (0 to 201 kg/ha) with and without nitrapyrin [1929-82-4] (0.55 kg/ha) added to correlate protein content, kernel wt., and grain yield. 14CO2 was applied to maize hybrid, Pioneer 3369A, to det. the effect of N on sucrose translocation into kernels. Zein and glutelins combined may serve as a functional N sink in the kernel to affect starch [9005-25-8] accumulation, kernel wt., and yield; however, zein may be more effective because its synthesis can be manipulated readily by N fertilization and genetic means. A pos. correlation between zein content, kernel wt., and grain yield was consistently obsd. The quantities of zein produced vary according to the amts. of N fertilizer applied. The increase in zein with higher rates of N fertilization (up to 201 kg/ha) did not decrease the nutritional quality of seed protein because increases in germ size and a slight increase in non-zein protein in the endosperm occurred concurrently. Based on this data, the selection of maize hybrids which are capable of producing max. amts. of zein with addnl. available N should provide a means of increasing kernel wt. and grain yield through the greater N sink potential of these hybrids.
