Thus, 11.8 mg catalyst component prepd. from (EtO)2Mg [2414-98-4], hexachloroethane [67-72-1], Et2SiCl2 [1719-53-5], and TiCCl4 and contg. 6.8% Ti was charged into an autoclave along with 0.7 mmol (iso-Bu)3Al [100-99-2] and 700 g isobutane and heated to 80°. H was added until to partial pressure 8.5 kg/cm2, and then ethylene (I) was added until the I partial pressure reached 5 kg/cm2. Polymn. was carried out for 1 h while I was supplied to keep const. pressure. The vessel was then purged of solvent and unreacted I to give 274 g polyethylene [9002-88-4] having a melt index (MI) 341 and bulk d. 0.36 g/cm3. The catalytic activity was 23, 200 g polymer/g catalyst. In the absence of the silane component in the catalyst, the polymer had MI 350 and bulk d. 0.36 g/cm3, and the catalyst activity was 27,500 using 10 kg/cm2 H.

Then 10 mg this catalyst, 0.16 mmol AlEt1.5(OEt)0.5Cl (I) [93707-91-6], 1000 mL hexane, and H were charged to an autoclave, and heated to 90° as C2H4 was fed to maintain total pressure 23 kg/cm2 (gage) for 1 h, yielding polyethylene (II) [9002-88-4] at 2300 g II/g catalyst-h-kg/cm2. The product had melt index 240 g/10 min and boiling hexane-extractable fraction 3.4%, and the polymn. solvent contained 1.1% (based on II) C8-32 hydrocarbons, vs. 400 g/10 min, 5.2%, and 2.1%, resp., using AlEt2Cl cocatalyst in place of I.
