Treating 5-bromo-5-nitro-1,3-dioxane with Me2C:NO2- Li+ gave 80% I, 40% Me2C(NO2)C(NO2)Me2, and 15% II. Treating 2-substituted dioxanes III (R = Me, Ph) with Me2C(NO2)Br gave 61 and 20% IV and 52 and 25% V. A radical-anion mechanism is discussed. .
