Some of their cas registry numbers are 83-47-6 and 508-02-1 components were isolated and sepd. from the EtOH ext. of the stem of R. macrocalyx. One of the 6 sepd. cryst. components showed antibacterial activity; further studies by IR, NMR, and mass spectroscopy and derivs. prepn. identified the antibacterial crystal component as I, which was named macrocalyxoformin A. Two of the remaining 5 components were identified as g-sitesterol and oleanolic acid, resp., and the other 3 cryst. components remained unidentified. .

They were found to be bisdesmoside glycosides. By chem. methods and spectral anal. it was established that the structure of I is oleanolic acid 3-[O-b-D-xylopyranosyl-(1?2)-O-b-D-xylopyranosyl-(1?4)]-O-b-D-glucur onopyranoside 28-O-b-D-glucopyranoside and that of II is hederagenin 3-[O-b-D-xylopyranosyl(1?2)-O-b-D-xylopyranosyl(1?4)]-O-b-D-glucuro nopyranoside 28-O-b-D-glucopyranoside. .
