DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) Several substituted phenols with antioxidant properties were potent reversible inhibitors of prostaglandin (PG) synthesis in 3T3 cell cultures. The ID50's for prostaglandin E2 (I) [363-24-6] synthesis in these cells were 0.1 .mu.M for 2,6-xylenol [576-26-1], 15 .mu.M for 3,5-xylenol [108-68-9], 30 .mu.M for m-cresol [108-39-4], and 100 .mu.M for phenol [108-95-2]. The corresponding values for aspirin and indomethacin were 4 .mu.M and 0.02 .mu.M, resp. The substituted phenols also inhibited serotonin [50-67-9] release, aggregation, and prostaglandin synthesis in human platelets induced by arachidonic acid but not by PGG2.

The oxidative polymn. of I in several org. solvents was more effective than emulsion polymn. The Cu complexes formed reversed micelles in water (3-10 vol.%)-DMSO. The acceleration by the complex was due to the adsorption of I on reversed micelles.
