DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Cationic polymn. of CH2:CHOCH2CH2C(CO2Et)3 (I) [108250-30-2] initiated by the HI/I2 system in PhMe at -40° afforded living polymers [108250-31-3] with a controlled mol. wt. (Mn = 103-104) and a narrow mol. wt. distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.1-1.2). The no.-av. mol. wt. of the polymers was directly proportional to monomer conversion and the monomer-to-initiator (HI) feed ratio. The polymers obtained with BF3×OEt2 had a fairly high mol. wt. (Mw x 105, Mn x 5 ′ 104) and a broad mol. wt. distribution. I was similar in reactivity to alkyl counterparts and order of magnitude more reactive than the corresponding mono- and diester vinyl ethers. .

The crystal structures of 1 and 2 were detd. by a single crystal x-ray diffraction studies and refined by full-matrix least squares techniques to R1 = 0.0272 and 0.0282 (for 2654 and 1274 unique nonzero reflections) for 1 and 2 resp. The crystals of 1 belong to the space group C2/c with Z = 8 and a 17.131(8), b 10.715(3), c 18.512(5) ? and b 92.97(3)°. The titanium atom in 1 is octahedrally coordinated by four terminal chlorine atoms and two oxygen atoms in cis position from the coordinated triester mol. Crystals of 2 are monoclinic, space group P21/c, Z = 4, a 14.109(2), b 10.049(2), c 15.644(3) ? and b 116.65(2)°. In the mol. dimeric compd. 6279-86-3 and 186505-60-2 are just another two chemicals used in this study., each aluminum atom is tetrahedrally coordinated by three terminal chlorine atoms and one oxygen atom from the bridging di-Et succinate mol. .
