The aqua[hydrogen ethylenediaminetetraacetato(3-)]ruthenium(III) (I) [15282-93-6] was prepd. according to a known method and was attached via an amide bond to the pyrolytic graphite electrode. The amide bond was formed by using I and either diisopropylcarbodiimide [693-13-0] or 1-cyclohexyl-3-(2-morpholinoethyl)-carbodiimidemetho-p-toluenesulfon ate [2491-17-0]. The reaction of I was rapid with pyridine [110-86-1], nicotinamide [98-92-0], and isonicotinamide [1453-82-3] and the formal potentials were calcd. from the voltammograms. These ligand substitution results are regarded to be particularly noteworthy and portend well for the use of complexes of this type as attached catalysts.

The polymers were shown to be highly cryst. by x-ray diffraction and polarizing microscopy. Their m.p. increased with increasing no. of thioethylene units, and decreased with increasing no. of oxyehtylene units. Some of the polymers complexed K strongly and solubilized CuCl2 in CCl4. .
