DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 60 (Waste Treatment and Disposal) b-Cyclodextrin (b-CD) polymers were prepd. by crosslinking of b-CD with phthalic or 3-nitrophthalic anhydride in anhyd. N,N-dimethylformamide in the presence of NaH. The wt.-av. mol. wt. and the chem. structure of the polymers were detd. by using high performance size exclusion chromatog. with a refractive index detector, and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The mol. wt. of the polymer increased with increasing molar ratio of substrates, and the reaction temp. 1H NMR spectra revealed that the b-CD polymers contained both mono- and diesters of phthalic and 3-nitrophthalic acids. In the case of phthalic moieties, about four or five diester moiety groups and for 3-nitrophthalic moieties about two or three diester moieties are linkages for b-CD mol. The results of copper(II) flotation obtained with by using Rokafenol N-8 as a non-anionic surfactant and the b-CD polymers as complexation collector agent, show that the removal of Cu2+ decreases with increasing mol. wt. of the b-CD polymers linked by phthalic or 3-nitrophthalic anhydrides. For both derivs. with pH increasing, the copper(II) removal increased. The highest flotation removal of 93% was found for b-CD polymers synthesized at 100° with a molar ratio b-CD:NaH:3-nitrophthalic anhydride of 1:7:7. .
