In this article, a new group of SO3H-functionalized ionic liquids based on benzimidazolium cation was synthesized and used as environmentally benign catalysts for the one-pot synthesis of biscoumarin derivatives. The ionic liquids showed high catalytic activities and reusabilities with good to excellent yields of the desired products. H 0 (Hammett function) values and the minimum-energy geometries of SO3H-functionalized ionic liquids were determined and the results revealed that the acidities and catalytic activities of ionic liquids in the synthesis of biscoumarin derivatives were related to their structures. Graphical Abstract: The simple, more efficient way for synthesis of biscoumarin derivatives has been developed. This new method abandon the traditional hazardous organic liquid and is carried out by using a one-pot reaction of 4-hydroxycoumarin with aromatic aldehydes in the presence of novel SO 3H-functionalized ionic liquids based on benzimidazolium cation as catalysts. The ionic liquids showed high catalytic activities and reusabilities with good to excellent yields of the desired products. Green chemistry matrix calculations showed high atom economy and a small E-factor for the reaction. Moreover, the simple and easy operational protocol using a small amount of thiamine hydrochloride (1 mol%) makes this procedure an alternative approach for this transformation industrially. This protocol was also extended to the synthesis of naturally occurring alkaloids such as tris(indolyl)methane, arundine, vibrindole A, 3,3-di(indol-3-yl)indolin-2-ones and biscoumarin derivatives.

Abstract: The magnetic nanostructured natural hydroxyapatite (HAP/Fe3O4 NPs) as a novel magnetic nanocatalyst was synthesized and fully characterized. The excellent catalytic activity of HAP/Fe3O4 NPs was investigated in the synthesis of biscoumarin derivatives under mild, green and solvent-free conditions. A series of aromatic (bearing different functional groups), heteroaromatic and aliphatic aldehydes have been converted to biscoumarins with good to excellent isolated yields. The significant advantages offered by the present method in close agreement with green chemistry principles are: catalyst is inexpensive, non-toxic, easy handling and reusable up to six recycle runs, magnetic separation of nanostructured catalyst, simple work-up procedure, short reaction time, high yields of products and using solvent-free conditions. Caffeine-H3PO4 along with caffeine-HClO4 and caffeine-HNO3 have been prepared and applied for one-pot preparation of bis(indolyl) methanes, 4,4′-(arylmethylene) bis(1H-pyrazol-5-ols), 3,3′-(arylmethylene) bis(4-hydroxycoumarins), 2,4,5-trisubstituted imidazoles, 1‐amidoalkyl‐2‐naphthols, and polyhydroquinolines. The catalysts were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and liquid chromatography (LC)–mass spectroscopy (MS) techniques. The results indicated high product yield, short reaction time, facile separation of catalyst, and easy work-up procedure, suggesting that caffeine-H3PO4 can be considered to be an efficient acidic catalyst for organic transformations.

- Simple protic ionic liquid [Et3NH][HSO4] as a proficient catalyst for facile synthesis of biscoumarins

Abstract: We have explored a number of protic ionic liquids (PILs) as a catalyst for the synthesis of biscoumarins by condensation of 4-hydroxycoumarin with an aromatic aldehyde. Methylimidazolium- and triethylammonium-based PILs were synthesized by simple neutralization reaction with protic acids. Triethylammonium hydrogen sulfate [Et3NH][HSO4] was found to be the best among the studied PILs concerning the yield of products and reaction time period. Different biscoumarin derivatives were synthesized based on 4-hydroxycoumarin and various substituted aromatic aldehydes at optimum reaction conditions. Obtained products were separated just by simple filtration. The facile method does not require additional purification for formed products. The catalyst has shown better yields along with outstanding recyclability, providing an environmental benign protocol for the synthesis of biscoumarin derivatives. Graphical Abstract: Screening of simple protic ionic liquids as a catalyst in the synthesis of biscoumarins, out of which [Et3NH][HSO4] was found to be best among the studied PILs.

3,3-(Butane-1,4-diyl)bis(1,2-dimethyl-1H-imidazole-3-ium)bromide ([BDBDMIm]Br) is easily used as an efficient and recyclable ionic liquid for the synthesis of bis coumarinyl methanes in the presence of a catalytic amount of ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) under grinding. All reactions are performed in the absence of solvent in excellent yield during short reaction time. Furthermore, the ionic liquid can be reused and recovered for several times without loss of activity. This method provides several advantages such as simple work-up, environmental friendliness and shorter reaction time along with high yields. All of synthesized compounds were characterized by infrared spectroscopy,1H and13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and elemental analyses.
