-
, (2016/06/28)
A main object of the present invention is to provide a birefringence improving agent that can realize a satisfactory white display even in a liquid crystal display device in which a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition is used and which can reduce the
Regioselective preparation of 3-alkoxy-4,5-difluoroanilines by S NAr
Van Brandt, Sven,Rombouts, Frederik J. R.,Martinez-Lamenca, Carolina,Leenaerts, Jos,Rauws, Tom R. M.,Trabanco, Andres A.
supporting information, p. 7048 - 7052 (2013/02/21)
A simple and scalable procedure to introduce alcohols selectively at the 3-position of 3,4,5-trifluoroaniline is described. The procedure uses powdered NaOH as base and catalytic 15-crown-5 in refluxing toluene with a Dean-Stark trap. A short exploration of other nucleophiles and fluoroaryl electrophiles is also described.
V-Shaped switching and interlayer interactions in ferroelectric liquid crystals

Linear electrooptic responses in ferroelectric liquid crystals can be achieved via thresholdless switching. The molecular parameters for the design of ferroelectric liquid crystals that may yield a thresholdless response have not been delineated so far. In this article we explore some of the chemical design features that may be utilised in controlling switching processes, and we develop property-structure correlations in order to achieve materials that exhibit thresholdless behaviour. The synthesis and mesomorphic properties of some novel antiferroelectric liquid crystals
Hird, Michael,Goodby, John W.,Toyne, Kenneth J.,Gleeson, Helen F.,Peter Buxton,Seed, Alexander J.,Herbert, Mark R.
, p. 213 - 220 (2007/10/03)
Several esters have been synthesised that exhibit the antiferroelectric smectic C phase. The core structures, like virtually all antiferroelectric materials, are very similar to that of MHPOBC. Lateral fluoro substituents have been used to reduce melting points and to investigate their effect on mesomorphic properties, spontaneous polarisation and tilt angle. A new device format reported by Lagerwall requires antiferroelectric liquid crystals with a 45° tilt angle. Novel antiferroelectric materials were prepared with fluoro substituents in lateral positions and in a terminal chain to provide low melting points, high antiferroelectric phase stability, high spontaneous polarisation and tilt angles of up to 45°. The synthetic routes to the novel materials are discussed, and the transition temperatures, tilt angles and spontaneous polarisations are compared to those of known materials.

Smetic C liquid crystal compounds, represented by the following formula (1) or (2) are disclosed. R1-O-A1-C≡C-A2-CO-(O)P-R2 (2)wherein R1and R2are C1-18 alkyl groups; A is a cyclic group, such as aubstituted or unsubstituted 1,4-phenylene group, X is direct bond, O or C#IDW#C; Y is -C#IDW#C- or -CH2CH2-; one of A1and A2is 1,4-phenylene group and the other is, 2,3-difluoro-1,4-phenylene group; and p is 0 or 1. These compounds can provide ferroelectric liquid crystal composition of low viscosity, and are useful as a component giving negative dielectric anisotropy and enlarging a temperature range showing smetic C phase.
