General Description

Tribromoethylene, also known as 1,1,2-tribromoethene, is a compound consisting of two carbon atoms, one double bond, and three bromine atoms. It is a colorless to yellow liquid with a sweet, pungent odor and is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. It is primarily used as a solvent for organic materials, as well as a fumigant for stored grains and seeds. Tribromoethylene is also used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals. However, it is considered to be a hazardous substance, with potential health effects including eye and skin irritation, and it is classified as a potential carcinogen.
