Ferroptosis inhibitors

Ferroptosis inhibitors are a class of compounds designed to block or mitigate the process of ferroptosis, a form of regulated cell death characterized by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation. Ferroptosis differs from other types of cell death like apoptosis and necrosis in its dependence on iron and lipid peroxidation rather than DNA fragmentation or membrane integrity loss. The inhibition of ferroptosis typically involves targeting key pathways involved in lipid metabolism, iron homeostasis, and antioxidant defense mechanisms. These inhibitors are being investigated for their potential therapeutic applications in diseases characterized by excessive oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, such as neurodegenerative disorders, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and certain cancers.
