Vat dyes are a class of synthetic dyes primarily used for coloring cellulosic fibers such as cotton. These dyes are characterized by their insolubility in water and their ability to penetrate deep into the fiber structure, resulting in excellent color fastness and resistance to fading from washing and exposure to light. Vat dyes are applied to textiles through a unique dyeing process involving reduction and oxidation steps. Initially, the water-insoluble vat dye is converted into a water-soluble form (leuco compound) through a reduction process using sodium dithionite or other reducing agents. Once dissolved in the dye bath, the fabric is immersed, and upon exposure to air, the leuco compound is oxidized back to its insoluble form, trapping the dye within the fiber. This process ensures vibrant and long-lasting colors on textiles, making vat dyes particularly suitable for applications requiring high durability and color retention.
