Sulfonate type

Sulfonates are a class of organic compounds characterized by a sulfonate group (-SO3?) attached to an organic moiety. The sulfonate group consists of a sulfur atom double-bonded to one oxygen atom and single-bonded to two hydroxyl groups, resulting in a negatively charged ion. Sulfonates are widely used in various industries and applications due to their surfactant properties, water solubility, and chemical stability. They function as anionic surfactants and detergents in cleaning products, where they help to reduce surface tension and enhance the dispersion of oils and greases. Sulfonates also serve as complexing agents in water treatment processes, aiding in the removal of metal ions and improving water quality.
