Monodeuterated mevalonic acid lactones, 2R,3R-2-d, 2S,3R-2-d, 3S,4R-4-d, and 3S,4S-4-d, 1-4, which are useful tools for terpenoid biosynthetic studies, were synthesized via a short and efficient route in 42-48percent yields from 3-butyn-1-ol.
